Transistor Detection Method

The transistors in the circuit mainly include crystal diodes, crystal transistors, thyristors, and FETs. The most common types are triodes and diodes. Correctly judging the quality of these transistors is one of the key points for maintenance.

1,Crystal Diode: First, we need to determine whether the diode is a silicon diode or a germanium diode. The forward voltage drop of a germanium diode is generally between 0.1 volts and 0.3 volts, while that of a silicon diode is typically between 0.6 volts and 0.7 volts. The measurement method involves using two multimeters: one to measure the forward resistance and the other to measure the forward voltage drop. Finally, it can be determined whether it is a germanium or silicon diode based on the value of the voltage drop. The silicon diode can be measured with the R×1k setting of the multimeter, while the germanium diode can be measured with the R×100 setting. In general, the difference between the forward and reverse resistances of the measured diodes should be as great as possible.

Generally, if the forward resistance is several hundred to several thousand ohms and the reverse resistance is several tens of kilo ohms or more, it can be preliminarily determined that the diode is functioning well. Additionally, the positive and negative poles of the diode can be identified. When the measured resistance is a few hundred ohms or several thousand ohms, this indicates the forward resistance of the diode. At this point, the negative probe should be connected to the negative pole, and the positive probe should be connected to the positive pole. Furthermore, if both the forward and reverse resistances are infinite, it means the diode has an internal disconnection. If both resistances are very large, the diode is also problematic. If both the positive and negative resistances are zero, it indicates that the diode is shorted.

2,Crystal Transistor: The crystal triode is mainly used for amplification. To judge the amplification capability of the triode, adjust the multimeter to the R×100 or R×1k setting. When measuring the NPN transistor, connect the positive probe to the emitter and the negative probe to the collector. The measured resistance should generally be several thousand ohms or more. Then, connect a 100 kΩ resistor in series between the base and the collector. At this point, the resistance measured by the multimeter should significantly decrease. The larger the change, the stronger the amplification capability of the triode. If the change is small or nonexistent, it indicates that the transistor has little to no amplification, and it may need reworking using the BGA Chip Rework Machine.
