At the recent Xiamen-Taiwan Export Commodities Fair, Ma Yude, deputy director of the Ministry of Science and Technology and leader of the National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Coordination Leading Group, pointed out that the vast application prospects of semiconductor lighting are receiving significant attention from both the scientific and industrial sectors. The combination of semiconductor technology with traditional lighting technology is poised to once again transform our world.
According to reports, semiconductor lighting, as a new high-efficiency solid-state light source, offers significant advantages such as long lifespan, energy efficiency, safety, and environmental protection. Its power consumption is only one-tenth of that of conventional lighting. Chen Lianghui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a researcher at the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made the following calculation: "If one-third of incandescent lamps are replaced with semiconductor lamps, the country could save 100 billion kWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the annual power generation of the Three Gorges Dam (with a total investment of 180 billion yuan, and an annual output of 84.68 billion kWh)."
Industry experts predict that as the most promising industry of the 21st century, semiconductor lighting technology is expected to replace traditional incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen lamps, becoming the leading light source for energy conservation and environmental protection.
Domestic Industrial Cluster Effect
At present, LED technology is being increasingly recognized by countries around the world as a key to illuminating the future. In 2003, China launched the National Semiconductor Lighting Project and included it in the National Science and Technology Research Program for the 10th Five-Year Plan. In interviews, reporters learned that the LED industry cluster effect in Nanchang is beginning to emerge, and the industry has been included in the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan." By 2010, it is expected that the annual output value will reach 10 to 20 billion yuan.
Multinational Companies Compete for Industry Leadership
According to industry estimates, by 2008, the global LED market value will increase from $12.5 billion in 2004 to $50 billion. The market potential is enormous, and competition is expected to intensify. A report by the US Department of Energy predicts that by 2010, 55% of incandescent and fluorescent lamps in the United States will be replaced by semiconductor lamps.
